José González – Against The Dying Of The Light

Since his previous album, Local Valley, the dramatic darkening of shadows across the global landscape has demanded blunter truth telling, carried by a more forceful, often frustrated and even angry expression from the singer-songwriter. With its focus on technological fears, alongside wider issues like the need to identify unhelpful thinking and refuse non-inclusive ideologies, Against The Dying Of The Light was born out of deep conviction as much as artistic choices.

Reflecting on the album as a whole, José explains: “Against the Dying of the Light is a reflection on how we create hurdles to human flourishing by clinging stubbornly to dogmatic ideologies where people follow dudes who pretend to know shit they don’t know.  These are songs about how we can navigate humanity towards flourishing on an individual and a collective level. They can be listened to just for the sounds, harmonies, and rhythms but the lyrics are meant to inspire people to engage and take action by collaborating to solve collective problems.”
